Face to Face 12-9-13

Dear Mom and Dad,
I will be leaving for the mission office in a little bit for my exit interview and just wanted to write real quick.
We got a major ice storm here and had to park all mission cars for three days we are all safe and doing great. I love y'all and will see you soon.
3 John 1:13-14
13 I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee: 14 But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee.

Thanksgiving Letter 12-2-13

Dear Mom and Dad,

This week was wonderful. The Free Speech that we hosted was awesome. We were able to talk with so many people. There were less there this time because of the Thanksgiving break but we still met some great people that we will be working with soon. We had a great Thanksgiving dinner at our ward mission leaders home and we were able to still teach a couple people even though a lot of kids were out of town for the holiday. We taught Killion, a kid we have been working with since we got here and he will be interviewed this week in preparation for his baptism on the 12th. We are very excited for him and what it will bring into his life! We had a great week and are excited for this new week!

I would love an assignment for the Christmas dinner  - whatever I can do to help I will gladly do. I am very excited to see all the Biblical attire! I will have to watch a Bible video and come up with something good! The new fence looks amazing and I am ready for landscaping projects. I am surprised how windy it is out there. Good luck for all the new little trees. I will not be shipping anything home. It will all fit in my suitcases. I will be selling my bike this week and I will be able to use money from that to take care of any extra costs.

I am sorry I do not have too much to write today but I will end with something I got out of my studies this week. I read in the beginning of Ether when the boats are being built so they can travel over the sea. In chapter 2 I noticed a pattern that the Lord has set and applies to us today. The Lord answered the questions of how the people will be able to breath and also gave the Brother of Jared assurance that he would command the waves and the wind to bring them to their destination. The third question the Lord asked the brother of Jared to come up with an answer, with the Lords help, to light the ships. This then led to a test of Faith and resulted in The Brother Jared seeing Christ an amazing miracle. In our lives we may ask questions and receive answers but sometimes the Lord wants us to find answers and seek his approval. This will increase our Faith and lead to miracles!

19 And behold, O Lord, in them there is no light; whither shall we steer? And also we shall perish, for in them we cannot breathe, save it is the air which is in them; therefore we shall perish.
20 And the Lord said unto the brother of Jared: Behold, thou shalt make a hole in the top, and also in the bottom; and when thou shalt suffer for air thou shalt unstop the hole and receive air. And if it be so that the water come in upon thee, behold, ye shall stop the hole, that ye may not perish in the flood.
21 And it came to pass that the brother of Jared did so, according as the Lord had commanded.
22 And he cried again unto the Lord saying: O Lord, behold I have done even as thou hast commanded me; and I have prepared the vessels for my people, and behold there is no light in them. Behold, O Lord, wilt thou suffer that we shall cross this great water in darkness?
23 And the Lord said unto the brother of Jared: What will ye that I should do that ye may have light in your vessels? For behold, ye cannot have awindows, for they will be dashed in pieces; neither shall ye take fire with you, for ye shall not go by the light of fire.
24 For behold, ye shall be as a awhale in the midst of the sea; for the mountain waves shall dash upon you. Nevertheless, I will bring you up again out of the depths of the sea; for the bwinds have gone forth cout of my mouth, and also the drains and the floods have I sent forth.
25 And behold, I prepare you against these things; for ye cannot cross this great deep save I prepare you against the waves of the sea, and the winds which have gone forth, and the floods which shall come. Therefore what will ye that I should prepare for you that ye may have light when ye are swallowed up in the depths of the sea?
Thank you mom and dad for you love and I hope you feel better dad.

Love,

Your missionary Elder Shoemaker

Proselyting and Cocoa - November 25, 2013

Dear Mom and Dad,

Our home is getting homier and homier every day. I am sure it is looking fantastic. I cannot even believe that we have a new home though. I will definitely be shocked when I see it for real evening though I have seen all the pictures. I am very very excited for all of the activities that Justin has been able to participate in. They all seem like great uses of time and he is really surrounding himself with great people. He seems to stay very busy and enjoys singing. I am very excited to hear is singing voice and see his funky hair Ha Ha! Sunday sounded very busy and it sounds like the talks that all y'all were able to give were excellent. The moving of the shed sounds like it was similar to when we moved our trampoline from Douglass to Jadwin. That was a sight to see. The Forte poster looks great! Did you do that Dad? Also thank you for my topic.  I am very excited for the topic and I have had ideas running around my head since I read it.

This week has been great. We were able to find five more new investigators this week! We are building up our teaching pool and Elder Sheeran and I are very excited for the growth they have made already and the growth that they will continue to make. Here is an experience of one of the five we found this week. A little bit of background- two weeks ago a member of our ward told us he has a friend that is interested in the church. We made efforts to contact the referral "Jake" but were unsuccessful. The next week at a YSA ward function this member brought Jake and we were able to meet him and introduce ourselves. We were unable to schedule a return appointment because of a work schedule. Anyway this week there was another activity called "Meet the Mormons" and Jake was there. The first hour of the activity was a "mix and mingle" with food and was followed by a lesson with Q&A. As we mingled we talked with Jake and set up to meet with him afterwards. The activity was great and the lesson we had was amazing. We are very excited for him and the opportunity we will have to keep teaching him.

Elder Sheeran is doing great. It has been a privileged to serve with him and help him learn his responsibilities as a Zone Leader.  This morning  I thought about how I really enjoy being his companion and am grateful for the Lord allowing me to serve with Elder Sheeran here in Denton. I am doing great. I understand that the time I do have here is not much longer. We are staying busy and I am thankful for the Lords help in remaining focused. This morning in my studies I read about covenants and pondered on the blessing we have as members to make covenants with our Heavenly Father. I know that they are necessary for our spiritual growth and I am very grateful for that strength that comes from our Heavenly Father when we make promises with him.

This week is going to be great. It may be a little slow as most of those we teach will be home for the holidays. On Tuesday though, we will be hosting a free speech booth, meaning we will be on one of the college campuses with a booth with Hot Cocoa. It basically allows us to proselyte in a designated area on campus. We did this two weeks ago and it was amazing. We have found multiple investigators from it and we get to talk to hundreds of people. It is a very neat experience. We will be having Thanksgiving dinner with our ward mission leader on Thursday and we will have the opportunity to teach Sunday school on Sunday!

This week I read a  conference talk that I wanted to share with y'all  Richard G Scott talks about the armies that fight throughout the book of Alma and how they built up their walls so high that the Lamanites could not cast stones or shoot arrows over the wall. Elder Scott relates this to us and protecting ourselves against temptation and he teaches ways to build our fortifications. Service stood out to me and I am very grateful for the many opportunities we have to serve throughout our lives as members of the church.

Father in Heaven has provided us tools that help to build the fortifications between our vulnerabilities and our faithfulness. Consider the following suggestions:
  •
Make covenants and receive ordinances for yourself. Then steadily and consistently work to provide ordinances in the temple for your own ancestors.
  •
Share the gospel with nonmember or less-active family members or friends. Sharing these truths can bring a renewed enthusiasm into your life.
  •
Serve faithfully in all Church callings, especially home teaching and visiting teaching assignments. Don’t be just a 15-minutes-a-month home or visiting teacher. Rather, reach out to each individual member of the family. Get to know them personally. Be a real friend. Through acts of kindness, show them how very much you care for each of them.
  •
Most important, serve the members of your own family. Make the spiritual development of your spouse and children a very high priority. Be attentive to the things you can do to help each one. Give freely of your time and attention.
Thank you Mom and Dad and everyone else for your prayers in my behalf.

Love,

Elder Shoemaker

Working in a NewVineyard - November 18, 2013

Dear Mom and Dad,

I bet that Justin's show was amazing. I am not surprised at all that they did very well. I cannot watch the video but I will get to see it eventually. Who else is in Justin's group?

It sounds like the new home is keeping yall busy with different projects. I bet that the new fence will look great and the cats will enjoy being outdoors. You should definitely find a place for the piano.  I know a couple songs now and if it does not fit anywhere I would definitely love to buy it and eventually use it in my home later. Yes, I do know that I do not have too much longer here in Texas, but I am making sure to stay very focused. This area has been a great blessing for me and has really helped me to do that. We have had to give Denton a jump start and have had to learn this area very quickly. As part of labors in the vineyard this week we were able to find 3 new quality investigators. Yesterday, we had a lesson with one of them and it was amazing. We went in with the plan to teach the Plan of Salvation however as we began to follow up on the commitments that we left with him we shifted the lesson to him. We ended up reading in Alma chapter 32 and focused the lesson on Faith. It was so powerful because we took the chapter and help to relate it to his life. He was able to tell us that he felt the spirit and  his plan was to go and meditate on the things we taught right after we left. We continued to discuss the lesson afterwards and Elder Sheeran told me that he was thinking the exact same thing when I shifted the lesson plan. This has happened many times with the missionaries I have served with and it is such an amazing experience to see the Lord's hand in the lessons we teach. Last night we also had another amazing Restoration lesson with another college student.

Elder Sheeran and I are really starting to gain traction here and we are starting to find more and more people to work with. I really love serving here in this area. There are miracles happening and we are finding the lost sheep. I am so very grateful for the opportunity we have as full time missionaries to be shepherds. I have learned so much as a missionary that will make me the kind of person I will be the rest of my life. Thank you so much Mom and Dad for the prayers you pray for me and the sacrifices you have made for our family.

Oh, and here is a link to a video I saw on lds.org this week. You may have seen it already but if not pause the video when the kid asks the question of "why the Lord told us to go to the right when it was not the right way" and think of how you would answer the question and then watch how it was answered.

Love,

Elder Shoemaker

Denton is AWESOME - November 11, 2013

Dear Mom and Dad,

This week has been great! With being white washed we have been very busy. We have definitely had direction from the spirit from the things that we have done here already. We have been able to meet a lot of the people from the ward. There are multiple activities that are put on by the YSA (Young Single Adults) ward so we have been able to go and meet the members there and even someone that we are teaching. His name is Killion and once someone gets introduced into the ysa they are sucked in by all of the wonderful members. It has been really cool to observe all the effort that is put into the rising generation of the chuch. There is even a senior couple missionary that is at the institute building full time and they are so cool. They are the Taylor's and are perfect for the YSA students. Denton is a very different place. we live within 5 minutes of two college campuses. There are a lot of people with their own unique beliefs and personalities. We cannot walk down one street here without seeing someone. We talk to so many people in a day and are doing our best to find people to work with. We have four baptismal dates currently and are working to build our teaching pool. This week it has really started to cool down and I love it. We live in a very nice apartment owned by members and this is an amazing area. There is so much going on and so many people. We are running constantly. I love it. There is so much to do we just need to organize it all.

Elder Sheeran is my new companion. He has just become a zone leader this week and was a district leader before. So I get the privilege to help him learn what his responsibilities are as a zone leader. The assignment of a zone leader is a companionship thing so we are both zone leaders. Sorry for the confusion.
Anyways Elder Sheeran is from Saint George Utah he is very excited and has tons of energy. I am very excited to serve the last part of my mission with him. He is a very hard worker and very obedient.

That is super exciting what Justin gets to do! Make sure to record him.  I really want to hear that. Vocal point is awesome. That will be such a cool expirience. I knew there was singing talent in the Shoemaker family. I actually have really enjoyed singing and will plan on maybe taking a class of two for it. It sounds like the retreat was great and that is turned out very well. I know new assignments can be overwhelming, but I am very grateful for the trust that the Lord puts in me and also in those that can help uplift the saints.

Please ask questions.  I definitely want to help you know what I get to do here.

I love y'all very much and I am very grateful for the support I receive from y'all.

New Assigment - New Area 10-28-13

Dear Mom and Dad,

It sounds like y'all had quite the adventure I bet if was pretty cold out there especially when in shorts and a T-shirt. It is great to hear about everyone that was willing to help and come to the rescue. I am glad you are safe dad and I appreciate that parallel to the gospel. I am sure that our Heavenly Father is really looking out for us when we are uncomfortable, however I am grateful for the trials that we have to help make us stronger. Plus you also have a really cool story. I am glad to also hear the cheerful attitude you had throughout the experience and I bet the stars looked amazing up there.

I am very excited how we are already formed into the ward. I know that there is a purpose for our family being there. It sounds like we have a great ward and a lot of strong members in that ward that are ready to lift where they stand. It sounds like homecoming was hit and it sounds like we got a party house already. Tell Justin that I said hi and to stop being so handsome. Thank you for the address-  it sounds too fancy. haha.

My new address is:

Loving the Work

Dear Mom and Dad,

This week went by very fast but there was so much that went on this week. It feels like Monday was a year ago. Anyway, Monday evening we started an exchange with one of the district leaders in the zone and his companion. We had a great service project Tuesday morning for a part-member family in the ward. I was with Elder Webb in my area and Elder Cathcart- a new missionary and his trainer Elder Hyde helped with the project. The member of the family was out of town so we worked with the non-member in her yard. Her name is Lucky (nickname). We trimmed the trees and bundled the branches so the can be taken away in the trash. We had the amazing opportunity to listen to Elder Pino of the Seventy on Wednesday. As he was speaking he had a few missionaries come up to the front as he tried to display what a good ward council could do to help a family come into the church. As missionaries we get to go to ward council and it has been something that I really enjoy. I represented the ward mission leader. I thought during that time what a ward mission leader can do to help missionary work. I would love to be a ward mission leader eventually.

This week we also had interviews with President Ames. They were amazing.  Right before interviews I thought about how he is my priesthood leader and that I should seek as much counsel from him as I could. I was grateful for the things I was able to come out of that interview with and I am so excited for the next 7 weeks. I love being a missionary and I love seeing the power of the holy ghost play such  a huge role in our efforts. Transfers are next Wednesday so I will be able to let you know next Monday what will happen. I will also get you my new address if it changes. That reminds me that I need our home address again so I can let the mission office know that change.

I am feeling the excitement too of the new home! I cannot wait to see it and see how everything fit into place. I cannot believe that Josh is home I did not realize I have almost been out as long as him. I am very excited for Jacob. I hope Justin feels better and make sure and tell Bro Porter howdy for me and thank you too.

Thank you mom and dad for what you have done to support me as a missionary out here. I am very grateful for your sacrifices and your support. I am not getting trunky and I will not let that happen. I am ready to be continue to be an instrument in the Lords hands. I do not boast in my strength but in the strength of the Lord. I am grateful for the many souls I have been able to assist as a missionary and bring into the waters of Baptism. I have loved this sacred opportunity and I love it. I would like to also start preparing the report that I will give. Will you ask Bishop Sintay what he would have me speak on.

I love you all very much.

PS I read this earlier this week and I was amazed and learned a lot from the willingness of the people of Ammon to listen to the lord. Alma 27: 5-12

Just a Few of My Favorite Things...General Conference 10-7-13

Dear Mom and Dad,

General Conference this weekend was so amazing. I was like a kid on Christmas! I thought of this as one of my favorite conferences. I love how the Prophet and Apostles warned of the deteriorating morality and virtue of the world. It was very sad to think about, but the direction that we received will significantly bless our lives as we live it in our lives. Another thing that really impressed me was the number of missionaries around the world and also how many missionaries were in the church building with Elder Crandall and myself - there were 37! That is so amazing there are so many missionaries! Anyway, I love all the talks so much so I will list all of my favorite quotes.

We gather here to hear the words of the Lord and return to our homes to live them.

Doubts you doubts before you doubt your Faith.

A church that does not have doctrine taught in it is like a phone without a battery.

Rise up! Stand tall! and Walk in the Light of Christ!

Brighten, touch, and save.

Man's laws cannot make that which is immoral, moral in God's laws.

Become the rock that the river cannot wash away.

Repentance is not punishment it is a hope filled path to a glorious future.

The stronger the winds the stronger the trees.

Pray every day, we need him every hour.

Performing Priesthood ordinances when unworthy is taking the Lord's name in vain.

The most important part of our service (as leaders) is our daily spiritual preparation.

Spiritual nourishment is as important as physical nourishment.

I loved all of these quotes. I went through my conference journal this morning and starred all of my favorite statements made in conference. It was cool to see the three word quotes from the first presidency that we can imprint in our minds to help us battle the adversary in our lives. I am also very grateful for the blessing that President Monson left on all of at general Conference. Those were my favorite words and I am excited to listen to them again. Did I tell y'all I love General Conference?

Our home looks so beautiful.  I cannot believe it is basically done and we will be moving in this week. It went too fast. By the way, can you send me the new address again I will have to let the mission office know my change of address. I am glad the missionaries have been able to help out with the process and that they are taken care of on their haircuts. I will be glad to let you know mom we do get free haircuts from a member in our ward and that this weekend during the break between conference lunch was provided by members in our ward for all of the missionaries. I know that since y'all have helped the missionaries at home Elder Crandall and I have been blessed too.

Dad I am also very sorry for forgetting to wish you Happy Birthday. Every week after we email I remember! So I wanted to let you know that I did not forget and wanted to wish you a very Happy Birthday.

This week besides conference was wonderful.  We had a lesson with the Rongey's this week on Wednesday and they were overly excited to tell us they went to the temple the night before to do Baptisms for the Dead. They took 25 of their own names and loved their experience there. I am so excited for them and their spiritual progression as a family. Also this week we had a lesson with an investigator named Shannon. She watched General Conference and it touched her so much she bore a very strong heartfelt testimony and wants to be baptized! It was so great to see her excitement and all the notes that she took as she watched!

Thank you for all your prayers. You continue to be in mine daily.

Love,

Elder Nathaniel Shoemaker

Our burden's may be light - 9/30/13

Dear Mom and Dad,
I cannot believe that the new home is almost done. Everything looks so great and it will be exciting when it is all done. Make sure to send a picture of the progress y'all have made on Micki's yard. Thank you for always sending pictures of the progress.  The kitchen looks amazing and the fireplace in the living room is a great touch. Our new home will look great with those blue Christmas Lights dad! Ha ha. Elder Crandall and I had the opportunity to help some elderly couples in the ward around their homes this week. We were able to mow a lawn and also help move boxes upstairs for another couple. Service would have to be one of my favorite things aside of teaching as a missionary. Sometimes we do it at the same time. Tell the missionaries I said thank you for helping out at the rental home.
It sounds like Dad is looking pretty classy at work now. It also sounds like you enjoy your job too Dad and that you are staying on the ball with the classes you are taking at the same time. That is one thing that helped me to work harder in school was watching you go through nursing school and you still kept working and still had time to spend with us. I know that we did scrimp and save and that has really helped me to work hard in my life and still make time for the really important things. We also enjoyed the leftover pizza for breakfast on Sunday mornings. I love and cherish those memories.
We had a great week here in Arlington.  It is slowly cooling down, although, not as drastic of a change as y'all, but it feels so good. The leaves are starting to change and the Halloween decorations are going up and I get to put up decorations still! =) This week we had the wonderful opportunity to teach a family in our ward who has a daughter that has not been baptized. The concern was she needs to be baptized for the right reason. The lesson we had this week went very well, and it was a true test of our teaching skills. Can we take things that are hard to understand and help children to understand them.  We focused on Faith this week and planted seeds with them. Elder Crandall and myself did it too. Thank you for your prayers because we definitely saw them answered with this family. Yesterday was great - it was fast Sunday and I was privileged to teach Priest quorum. I was asked to teach about the law of chastity, focusing on pornography. I was able to use part of Elder Bednars talk this last conference which taught it so well. I also used your idea dad and wrote on the back of my old white shirt and talked about how the atonement can cleanse us from all sin. The lesson was great and Elder Crandall helped in the process of teaching too! I will send a picture of my shirt.
I am very excited for General Conference this weekend. I love the opportunity to learn from living prophets guidance and counsel that they receive through revelation from the Lord. This week will go by very fast and will be busy.  It is so great to be here in Texas.  I love being a missionary.
Here is something from my studies this week. It is from Mosiah 24 and talks about how the Lord will help strengthen us so we can lift our burdens with ease. He may not take them away but he will strengthen us in our burdens - verse 15. I am also grateful for the example of the people and how prompt they are in giving thanks for the blessing they receive verses 21-22.
12 And Alma and his people did not raise their voices to the Lord their God, but did pour out their ahearts to him; and he did know the bthoughts of their hearts.  13 And it acame to pass that the voice of the Lord came to them in their afflictions, saying: Lift up your heads and be of good comfort, for I know of the covenant which ye have made unto me; and I will covenant with my people and deliver them out of bondage.
14 And I will also ease the aburdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as bwitnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their cafflictions.
15 And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did astrengthen them that they could bear up their bburdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with cpatience to all the will of the Lord.
16 And it came to pass that so great was their faith and their patience that the voice of the Lord came unto them again, saying: Be of good comfort, for on the morrow I will deliver you out of bondage.
17 And he said unto Alma: Thou shalt go before this people, and I will go awith thee and deliver this people out of bbondage.
18 Now it came to pass that Alma and his people in the night-time gathered their flocks together, and also of their grain; yea, even all the night-time were they gathering their flocks together.
19 And in the morning the Lord caused a adeep sleep to come upon the Lamanites, yea, and all their task-masters were in a profound sleep.
20 And Alma and his people departed into the wilderness; and when they had traveled all day they pitched their tents in a valley, and they called the valley Alma, because he led their way in the wilderness.
21 Yea, and in the valley of Alma they poured out their athanks to God because he had been merciful unto them, and eased their bburdens, and had delivered them out of bondage; for they were in bondage, and none could deliver them except it were the Lord their God.
22 And they gave athanks to God, yea, all their men and all their women and all their children that could speak lifted their voices in the praises of their God.
I love y'all
Love,
Elder Nathaniel Shoemaker
